Deepening worries over US President Donald Trump's uncertain future following a series of scandals has sent jitters through financial markets in the United States.
This is largely because of three news stories that have broken in the past two weeks involving Trump and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The includes the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, who was overseeing a lawful investigation into possible campaign ties to Russian influence.
The disclosure is the latest seemingly damning report regarding Trump's relations with an ongoing probe into his presidential campaign's ties to Russian Federation.
Gergen was talking on CNN Tuesday about the revelation that former FBI Director James Comey wrote contemporaneous memos after conversations in which he alleges President Donald Trump tried to get him to drop an investigation into Trump's then-national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation. "The president is not above the law", he added. Texas congressman Al Green called for the impeachment of Cheeto Jesus on the House floor.
"I think policy-wise Pence wouldn't be any better than Trump [for liberals] frankly, and might actually be more competitive". Rather, as the great expositor of impeachment - and the Constitution - Alexander Hamilton said, 'We move to impeachment because of the misconduct of public men, the violation of some public trust, and these relate to injuries done to society itself.' And we have certainly seen at least probable cause of that, if not proof of that, as yet.
As Noah Feldman wrote in Bloomberg, "But a Democratic House would have more than enough material now to start the impeachment process - including the revelation of the request to Comey".

Members of the committee draft articles of impeachment, essentially, charges of high crimes or misdemeanors against the president.
Yet House Speaker Paul Ryan appeared to downplay the Comey report.
Fun fact: Back in 1998, Bernie Sanders was one of the representatives arguing against impeaching Bill Clinton.
MAXINE WATERS: We don't have to be afraid to use the word impeachment.
The Senate holds the trial for the charges.
At this point, the Senate would act as a courtroom of sorts.
The fact that Trump can fire the special counsel is why a select committee or a special prosecutor is needed. Members of the House lead the prosecution and senators are jurors. The timeframe for Bill Clinton was around three months, but this excludes the extensive investigation time.
Trump fired Comey last week in a controversial move that has raised questions about whether he was trying to obstruct a federal probe into Russian interference in the USA election.
Keith Whittington, an expert on presidential impeachment and a professor of politics at Princeton University, said: "It may be that he's acting completely within his legal authority and yet still has abused his office in ways that might rise to the level of impeachable offenses".
