But that will all change at WWE Backlash when the former two-time NXT Champion will make his in-ring SmackDown LIVE debut against an irate Dolph Ziggler. But last night saw the transformation of the man known as Jinder Mahal into the Maharaja of the ring, dethroning the the Viper Randy Orton and claiming the spoils of Backlash for himself to become the latest WWE Champion.
Whether you like it or not, Jinder Mahal is your new WWE champion. Shinsuke Nakamura needs to have stronger matches to keep up with the expectations before WWE fans start to turn against his push.
This is not the only time that Randy Orton has broken the fourth wall during a wrestling match. Though it looked like Fandango was about to hit the Last Dance (top-rope leg drop) he ate a super kick from Jey. The shoulder injury kept him from getting enough of a cover to keep Mahal down, though, giving the challenger another opening to exploit.
Orton, who was bragging about his 13 title reigns before the fight, took on both Mahal and his allies, The Singh Brothers.
It is now May, and Jinder Mahal is WWE Champion. But a feud between to former members of The Wyatt Family began shortly after. Orton had hit an RKO on Jinder, and the Singh Brothers pulled Jinder out of the ring before Orton could get the pin (I never understood why people could get that involved with the match without being DQ'd, but hey, wrestling right?).
Styles was set to deliver a Styles Clash on the table, but Owens reversed.
Owens would then spend the match focusing on Styles' injured knee that prevented him from performing his signature maneuver, the Phenomenal Forearm. After losing the title to Chris Jericho at Payback and regaining at the next SmackDown, logically, Owens will retain it here - with some dark tactics. Let's take a look at each match and find out. Of course, the WWE Championship is not even really the main title in the promotion anymore. It may seem like Dean Ambrose is in a bit of a rut within WWE now, but his match with AJ Styles proved exactly why he is still very valuable to the WWE. Champ Naomi, 29, teamed with Becky Lynch, 30, and "The Queen" Charlotte Flair, 31, to take on The Welcoming Committee - Natalya, 34, Carmella, 29, and Tamina, 39.
Ever since arriving at SmackDown as part of the Superstar Shakeup, Zayn has been locking horns with Corbin in an effort to prove that he belongs as part of the blue brand in WWE. You hate me for who you think I am. From an in-ring standpoint, this match was one of the night's more pleasant surprises.
Sami Zayn will be facing Baron Corbin in a singles match after two attacks by Corbin. This is big moment for the fans in India. On the other hand, the fluke victory for Owens continues to build his heel heat while still allowing him to walk out of the show with his title.
It's also one of the reasons Mahal has so many haters. There is a general feeling that WWE officials waited too long to debut Shinsuke and his match with Dolph was underwhelming for many people because the expectations were too his first match on the main roster.
Nakamura got the win, as he obviously would, but the execution was poor.
