Powered by 38 points from Kevin Durant and 28 from Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors ripped Cleveland 113-91 in Thursday's opener of the best-of-seven championship series, aided by 20 Cavaliers turnovers to only four for the hosts.
While both teams shot the ball poorly, getting open shots in close is as sure of a momentum-killer as it gets - and emphatic dunks in front of a home crowd will only make matters worse for a team trying to make a statement in this year's NBA Finals.
Simply put, Thompson is putting himself on the line for Game 2.
The sarcasm was dripping from his lips as he spoke, and understandably so if you have LeBron, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving on your team. The betting market does not think Cleveland will bounce back in Game 2 on Sunday night.
So what has to change in Game 2 for the Cavs to have a chance?
A year ago he kept close tabs on Steph Curry on screens but he was helped by the Warriors star carrying a knock.
There are some impressive streaks that merit some mention going into Game 2 of the NBA Finals. Klay Thompson added fuel to the fire when he said, "Maybe he (James) just got his feelings hurt". I had Golden State in six. He hadn't reached double figures in points or rebounds this year in the first two games combined. Kerr was well enough to attend the Warriors' past five playoff games and stay in the locker room while assistant Mike Brown ran the team on the floor. During Saturday's interviews, he was adamant his team did not play that poorly in Game 1. Want to know how many times Thompson has posted such low-impact stats previously in his career, while playing at least as many minutes?
Kerr had undergone a procedure to fix a spinal fluid leak on May 5 at Duke University but was not well enough to return until Sunday. It's impossible to work in practice against the pace of Golden State, and Cleveland didn't handle the transition game almost well enough.
The Warriors head coach had missed 15 games - all Warriors wins - since stepping away from on-court coaching before Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals, as complications from a botched 2015 spinal surgery had arisen again, and Kerr, who had struggled with the debilitating effects of spinal fluid leaks for two seasons, didn't have the energy to be on the sidelines.
The Cleveland coach says Kerr is someone he respected even before he started coaching and is glad Golden State has its leader back.
