"I hear Steve Scalise over near second base scream".
Congressman Steve Scalise, third ranking Republican in the US House of Representatives, remained in critical condition on Thursday following the shooting that wounded three others, including a Capitol Police officer.
"We've had a very, very divided country for many years", Trump said. Vice President Mike Pence visited Scalise Thursday morning.
During his visit, Trump also met with Capitol Police special agent Crystal Griner, who was shot while returning gunfire during the Wednesday shooting, and Griner's wife, Tiffany Dyar.
Since then, the game has grown in popularity and graduated to the diamond at Nationals Park in Southeast Washington where it serves as a fundraiser for various local charities.
A day earlier, a man with a rifle and a handgun wounded Scalise and others at a baseball practice in a park in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. In the immediate aftermath Wednesday the extent of his injuries was not widely known.
James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill., who was gunned down by police to end the shooting at Simpson Field in Alexandria, Va., appears to have maintained two Facebook pages, each replete with profane anti-Trump posts. But the reach of social "megaphones" (mass media, the Internet) is greater by the day. Hodgkinson rarely joined in the political discussions often set off by the television in the room and never showed any signs that he was troubled, Euille said.
The shooting prompted talk of improving security for lawmakers, most of whom are unaccompanied by officers in their normal day-to-day pursuits.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., also called for unity in a brief address to his chamber hours after the attack.
Rep. Steve King of Iowa said over Twitter, "The center of America is disappearing, and the violence is incited by the leading cultural voices of the Left". "How dare they say such a thing", Pelosi said.
The California Democrat notes that she herself is now featured in millions of dollars of attack ads running in a Georgia House district where there's a hard-fought special election next week.
Scalise's position as whip in the Republican-controlled House makes him one of the most senior figures in Congress.
The attacker, who was shot by Scalise's security detail and later died, was an IL man whose social media postings showed anger at Trump and the Republicans.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Tim Slater said the Federal Bureau of Investigation needs the public's help in piecing together Hodgkinson's whereabouts and activities while he was in Alexandria.
"If he had gotten on the field, we had nowhere to go", Williams said.
"Is this the Republican or the Democratic team practicing?" Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said his colleague "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood".
In the case of a gunshot wound like that suffered by Scalise, doctors said the initial surgery was likely a "damage control" procedure to stop hemorrhaging, control contamination and stabilize the patient.
"The Members of Congress, the staff and the volunteers who were out at practice this morning care deeply about the causes they play to benefit".
The FBI said authorities are speaking with people who knew Hodgkinson or who may have encountered him.
Members of the House and Senate leadership have armed officers assigned to protect them, but rank-and-file members do not routinely have security details.
