Israeli police shot dead three Palestinians from Um Al fahem town in Al-Aqsa mosque squares on Friday morning claiming they shot 3 israeli police men.
Jerusalem Police Commissioner Yoram Halevy said the three gunmen - who were Arab citizens of Israel - were calculating and methodical in their attacks.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the police to handle the issue and ordered the Al-Aqsa mosque closed to Friday prayers, forcing Palestinians to perform their prayers in the streets. "They are the direct result of an infrastructure of hate and incitement from the Palestinian Authority, elements of the Arab Israeli political leadership and in particular, worldwide bodies like UNESCO, which only acquiesce and inflame the Palestinian campaign of hate, lies and terror against Israel".
They largely identify with the Palestinian cause.
A relative says three Palestinian assailants who killed two Israeli policemen from inside a Jerusalem holy site were devout Muslims who frequently visited the shrine.
Tensions are often high around the compound, which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the golden Dome of the Rock.
The Mufti was attacked and taken prisoner by the soldiers and officers after he led Friday prayers in front of the Aqsa Mosque gates, after Israel made a decision to shut it down following the shooting.
Hours earlier Israeli forces raided Dheisha refugee camp in the occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem during pre-dawn raids, shooting and killing an 18-year-old resident of the camp during clashes that broke out in protest of the soldiers' presence.
Police said the attack occurred shortly after 7 a.m.
Israeli forces arrested two Palestinians during the raid, sources said.
It is considered the third-holiest site in Islam and the holiest in Judaism. The compound was then declared closed and prayer was banned.
"Israeli police detained my father in a violent manner and took him to unknown destination", said Omar, son of the grand mufti.
Jordan, a custodian of the sacred compound, called for its immediate reopening.
According to the Israeli authorities, in most cases we are talking about the participants of the attacks on Israelis.
"We have no choice but to wait here until they let us through", he said.
It is located in east Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed in a move never recognised by the global community.
The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.
