Murray was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in 2014 that spread into his liver and lungs. In his second year as Sens coach in 2005-06, the Senators finished the season with a 52-21-9 record. The consummate professional, that's what he was.
After stepping down from his general manager position in 2016, he served alongside GM Pierre Dorion as a special adviser. "He was a great father, mentor and teacher", said in a press release the owner of the ontario, Eugene Melnyk, who has offered his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
He was hired as coach and general manager in 1990 after the Red Wings missed the playoffs and GM Jimmy Devellano was reassigned as senior vice president while Jacques Demers was sacked as head coach.
National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman was quick to release a statement in the aftermath of the passing.
But the Red Wings won just one playoff series under Murray - beating Minnesota in 1992 - and he was replaced by Scotty Bowman after Detroit was ousted by Toronto in seven games during the first round in 1993 after winning the first two games. "While his warmth and dry sense of humour were always evident, they were accompanied by the fiery competitiveness and determination that were his trademarks". Former player Craig Laughlin described Murray as a players' coach with an old-school approach and a knack for managing personalities.
"As we mourn Bryan's passing, we celebrate his many contributions to the game - as well as his courage". After being fired during a hard 1989-90 season he was recruited by the Detroit Red Wings, who made him head coach and general manager.
The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time.
"That was", Murray said last season, "as much fun as any of us had in hockey".
After a long hard battle with cancer, Bryan Murray has passed away.
Murray's younger brother Terry, 67, coached the Panthers from 1998-2001. Following his days with the Red Wings, Murray served as general manager for the Florida Panthers (1993-00), Anaheim Mighty Ducks (2002-04) and Ottawa Senators (2007-16) and also had stints serving as head coach for each team, ultimately finishing his head coaching career with a 620-465-131-23 record.
