"We have to look at [eSports] because we can't say, 'It's not us".
The youth's massive interest in eSports could be a huge draw for the Olympics, which is something that Estanguet sees as a good opportunity to invest in.
Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Olympic bid committee, said that Paris officials will hold talks with esports representatives and the IOC about the possibility of egaming joining the 2024 schedule of events.
"Look, there's 11 years before the Games, so it wouldn't hurt if they took a year or even six months instead of rushing", said Jed Parriott, an organizer of the NOlympics LA group.
Back in April The Olympic Council of Asia already announced that it would be adding 4 eSports events to the 2022 Asian Games, Dota 2, StarCraft II, Hearthstone and a yet to be revealed sports game (possibly Federation Internationale de Football Association or NBA). It seems like the gap between eSports, video games and the Olympics is starting to close in. "Let's see if we can find some bridges", Estanguet added.
Estanguet, a three-time Olympic gold medal victor in canoe slalom, said the committee simply can't look the other way when it comes to eSports. It's not about Olympics, ' " Estanguet told the AP. I think it is interesting to have a dialogue with the global olympic Committee, with the community, eSports, and to better understand the process and the reasons for its success , "said Tony Estanguet".
Final decisions on additions to the Paris games won't be made until 2020 leaving plenty of time for argument.
Paris is set to be named as the host for the 2024 Games at an International Olympic Committee meeting in Lima, Peru in September, with a competing bid from Los Angeles now expected to shift to the 2028 Games. "The IOC will have the last say, if they want esports on the programme".
As for the fighting game community, it's probably best we be excited at the prospect, but not have any expectations for the time being. Some of the most popular eSports games are Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Overwatch and StarCraft II.
