Giroud came big for the Gunners once again.
It didn't take long for things to get started, with Alexandre Lacazette giving Arsenal the lead in just the second minute of his debut as the most expensive signing in the history of the club.
But then Arsenal's super-subs came to the rescue: Aaron Ramsey drew the scores on 83 minutes, before Giroud's sublime header gave the Gunners all three points. Instead, Wenger avoided a third successive season-opening loss at the start of his new two-year contract. I keep the faith and I still believe I can have an important part to play this season in the club.
"Not only as a player, he is a fantastic player, b ut as well in the group - he has a big weight in the squad and it was a relief for me that he chose to stay".
"He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy he wants to stay".
Giroud had been seriously considering his future following the £52 million club record signing of Alexandre Lacazette and Wenger's certainty but has been persuaded to stay in what is now a "super sub" role.
Asked if Giroud could still leave before the transfer window closes on August 31 until January, Wenger replied: "No. Giroud in his prime is at the top of his game". "Even when I played Giroud through the middle and him on the left he did very well on the left".
"I think we have all seen the amusing business of the transfer window and we never know what is round the corner".
"It was good. Obviously I'm still getting used to the English game, the positives and negatives, shall we say, but I'm learning".
"I feel as well that the goals we conceded, we can work together to get rid of that because one was a ball we lost in the build-up and we conceded two goals on corners".
