Giving a major jolt to terror group Hizbul Mujahideen, Indian forces on Sunday gunned down Yasin Itoo alias Mehmood Ghaznavi, a self-styled operations commander of the terror group, PTI reported.
Two soldiers and three rebels were killed in an overnight gunbattle in Kashmir, officials said August 13, in the latest bloodshed in the disputed Himalayan territory.
Two soldiers have been killed and three injured in the on-going gunfight in South Kashmir's Shopian district.
The security forces have recovered three AK 47 from the terrorists in the operation. Our correspondent reports that the slain terrorists were identified as local Hizbul Mujahideen cadres. Over a dozen civilians were injured as the security forces fired live ammunition to quell the stone-pelting mobs.
Police strongly denied rumours that a mosque was damaged during the gunfight between the security forces and the militants.
On Saturday afternoon, the Army, police and CRPF had launched the operation in Awneera hamlet, around 15 km from Shopian town, after receiving inputs about the presence of militants.
The gunfight also left two soldiers martyred while unknown number of militants reportedly escaped from the spot. "It will be over in a couple of hours", a senior police officer said, wishing anonymity. The injured were shifted to District Hospital Kulgam for treatment. "He was also involved in firing on Bn Hqrs IRP 18th Bn Reshipora and on Army party at Moolu Chitragamm", the police spokesman said.
After an Indian soldier was martyred by the Pakistan Army in Jammu and Kashmir's Krishna Ghati, the defence expert on Sunday condemned the attack, stating that losing soldiers is a big loss to the country.
He said the militants continued to engage the security forces by continuously changing their positions.
In a growing series of encounters in the Kashmir Valley, another encounter took place in Shopian district of Kashmir Valley on Saturday.
Many civilians were injured when troops resorted to pellet firing on the protesters.
