Before the start of trading, the Commerce Department released a report showing retail sales dipped by 0.2 percent in August after rising by a downwardly revised 0.3 percent in July. It rose 1.6 percent for the week. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,637.53 for a gain of 55.19 points or 0.58%. Ex-auto sales had been expected to increase by 0.5 percent.
Worth noting, the Fed estimated that Harvey subtracted roughly 0.75 percentage points from total industrial production, while the BLS said the gathering of data in areas impacted by the hurricane was slower than in previous months.
"Motor vehicle and parts sales tumbled 1.6% in August, but replacement of hurricane-damaged vehicles in coming months will push up sales, and possibly prices, of both used and new vehicles", predicted Berenberg Capital Markets.
The acceleration in inflation could keep the Federal Reserve on track to raise interest rates later this year.
From a sector standpoint, on Friday the best performance was seen in the following industrial groups: Semiconductors (1.90%), Fixed line telecommunications (1.78%), Telecommunications (1.68%) and Railroads (1.49%). Gamble Jones Investment Counsel now owns 7,546 shares of the company's stock worth $1,609,000 after purchasing an additional 462 shares during the last quarter. That was the index's sixth consecutive advance.
Railroad and trucking stocks also moved notably higher over the course of the session, while some weakness was visible among software stocks.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 2 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,498.
The consumer price index's (CPI) 0.4-percent gain last month was its biggest in seven months and is the last major economic data to be released ahead of the Federal Reserve's September 19-20 policy meeting.
