Tekeda Alemu, Ethiopian ambassador to the United Nations and the president of UN Security Council for the month of September, addresses a press encounter after UN Security Council closed-door consultations at the UN headquarters in NY, on Sept 15, 2017.
"We again call on the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) to cease its provocative and highly risky actions that threaten the peace, stability, and security of the region", said Philippine Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano in a statement on Saturday, September 16.
North Korea fired an intermediate range ballistic missile over Japan on Friday, marking the second highly provocative missile launch in less than a month.
"The Security Council also emphasized the vital importance of North Korea immediately showing a honest commitment to denuclearization through concrete action and stressed the importance of working to reduce tension on the Korean Peninsula", said Tekeda Alemu, President of the Security Council.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday condemned the launch of another ballistic missile by North Korea.
Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia also warned that there is no alternative to a peaceful solution. "North Korea continues to pose a threat to global security and stability and must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its illegal programs".
However, the yen's fall against the dollar on Friday raised questions about investors' willingness to buy Japanese assets when Japan is in North Korea's firing line. "We should engage in meaningful negotiations", he told reporters after the consultations.
The Security Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution to impose sanctions on the DPRK over its nuclear test on September 3 which violated the previous Security Council resolutions.
Cayetano will consult with other foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in NY to discuss what Asean can do to help reduce tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
The warning issued to residents to seek shelter in solid buildings was given for the same areas as the previous launch of a missile by North Korea on Aug 29.
