That would be a monumental task for an experienced Power Five program to play those two programs on consecutive weeks.
USC's sophomore quarterback led the Trojans back from the brink of disaster Saturday, engineering a tying drive in the closing minute of regulation, allowing his team to survive Texas in two overtimes, 27-24.
The Texas Longhorns-USC Trojans 2006 Rose Bowl was one for the ages. And most importantly for Herman, Big 12 play doesn't start until September 28 - so the conference title game is still a possibility. Texas has suffered three straight losing seasons and hasn't won the Big 12 since 2009.
Texas hasn't tipped its hand as to which of the three quarterbacks will start on Saturday night.
But Helton was effusive in his praise of the program, beginning its first season under Coach Tom Herman.
Vince Young. Fourth and two. However, his season could not have started any worse. The Longhorns were gouged by Maryland for 263 rushing yards in their season-opening loss, including 132 on 12 carries by Ty Johnson - a 1,000-yard rusher like Jones last season. Or will Herman and the Texas offense find running room similar to Stanford and San Diego State and keep the Trojans' offense on the sidelines?
As for the USC Trojans, the university managed to return to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 2009.
It may not have been pretty for the first 60 minutes of play, but a double-overtime win by No. 4 USC will leave a memorable image of a walk-on kicker, Chase McGrath, nailing a 43-yard field goal to lock down a double overtime victory over Texas. Assuming the Trojans can avoid any major injuries, this team should be in the mix for a spot in the CFB Playoff.
The quick takeaway: The Trojans have three huge problem areas to address after Week 3: pass-catching, play calling and health on the defensive line.
Ball protection and pass rushing will also be critical with both teams capable of taking advantage. There were good things for the freshman Ehlinger, and some really not good things. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to stay updated with the latest news and exclusive giveaways!
Mitchell's impact has been prevalent throughout the first two games, but so has Burnett's presence. Darnold, in an act of clairvoyance, threw to a spot and Burnett got it.
What the Longhorns defense did was give the offense a chance by holding USC in check, a hallmark of Todd Orlando's defenses at Houston against ranked opponents (think of the pressure on Louisville's Lamar Jackson).
Yet, the usually elusive Darnold routinely was hemmed in by the Texas rush.
As for my prediction, I have to side with the Trojans.
USC has tried to pretend that game does not exist - claiming an undefeated record against the Longhorns after the game was vacated by the NCAA - but Texas will be trying to come to their home turf to remind them of that sour taste that was left in their mouths over a decade ago. USC's defense is slightly hobbled though; linebacker Porter Gustin and defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu are both doubtful.
