In this world of three w’s (www), you can do virtually anything sitting in front of a computer at your home. Paying bills, shopping, fund transfers, fund deposits etc. And now we have the online banking facility too. But with the cyber crimes increasing day by day, we should take some precautions to be on the safer side.
Password is the key to your accounts, be it bank account or email account. So, you must keep the password as secure as you would keep a virtual safe key. Normally you keep the key of the safe on your person. Same way, never reveal your password to anyone – even to your closest of friends or relatives.
Be cautious when you key in the password. At regular or irregular intervals change the passwords. Never write it down on any conspicuous places. Using same password for all cards or accounts is also not wise. Alphanumeric password with a mix of upper and lower case letters is the best for passwords. Ensure that it is at least 8 digits long.
If possible never use public outlets; net cafes, kiosks etc. for serious transactions. Do such dealings from the security of your home or office. You should protect your system from virus with the latest virus protection and also firewall. Regular updates will save you from many problems later.
You will receive mails requesting your bank details for some or the other verification. Ignore or delete it at once. Check with your bank if they had sent such an enquiry. Visit your bank’s regular website and update the information needed. Never forget that no bank will request to give them your password.
Correspondences from banks and other financial institutions should be shredded and discarded properly, because these may contain confidential information. It may be misused by any one rummaging through your garbage.
