The Indian society is changing by the day – working couples or children going abroad for employment are common these days. These factors have effected a change in the traditional Indian value system that requires children to take responsibility of their aging parents.
If you’re looking forward to a languid life, imbued with serenity and bliss post-retirement, you might want to think of homes for the elderly. A respectful, independent, fun-filled life amongst like-minded contemporaries is the way of life in a home for the elderly today.

The 60-plus age group is now learning to fend for themselves and live an independent life separate from their children. Not only is it convenient for the younger generation but it also lets the elderly live their retired lives as a phase when they can fulfill their dreams. They look at this phase as an opportunity to do things that their hectic working lives did not permit. The older generation is eager to live life on its own terms rather than becoming a burden for their children. Homes for the elderly provide such lifestyles to its residents.

Most of the homes for the elderly provide food and medical facilities. The activities are designed to encourage participation by all and are enjoyable for the people living there. Most senior citizen homes offer facilities like a library, TV room, and Yoga room that will be useful to its residents.

Elderly homes are mostly run by charity organizations. For example, Nivara in Pune is one such elderly home that is financed through charities and donations. Delhi also houses several charity based elderly homes like Sandhya or The Delhi Christian Friend in Need Society’s Home for the Aged. Sathyalok Ideal Home for Senior Citizens and CSI Home for the Aged are similar ones in Tamil Nadu. Most of the working staff does voluntary work. Therefore, you may notice that elderly homes are not as glamorous as retirement homes where people pay a fee to stay. However, elderly homes are definitely respectable places to live in, even for the desolate, financially weak, or physically challenged elderly people.

Do you know of any homes for the elderly in your city? How do these homes function daily? What is the standard of living provided in these homes? Would you be happy in any of these homes?

I believe that nursing homes is a good option , especially for us NRI’s, who cannot be there with their parents on a daily basis. At least we will have the mental satisfaction that our parents are being cared for, in terms of health. What say?
